Troubleshooting Transitioning Curls

Hey there curly, so you are currently on the road to embracing your curls, that’s awesome! While transitioning and learning how to care for your curls it can sometimes be difficult, and hard to understand what your curls are telling you. So here is a list of the most common queries that arise and how to troubleshoot them.

“I have just started conditioner washing and my hair feels greasy!”

If you have recently switched across from lathering/foaming products to a conditioner based/no foam wash then your scalp with certainly need some time to adjust. Many foaming products contain harsh sulphates that strip scalps of their natural oils. Over time our scalps produce more oils to compensate for the loss in natural oils. When you switch across to no foaming/conditioner based washes your scalp will still be in the process of creating extra oils, therefore you will need to give your scalp time to adjust to the new washing method which can take a minimum of 4 weeks. Make sure you are also using a conditioner based wash that is formulated for co-washing. The BY SELINA Curl Cleanser & Conditioner contains one very gentle surfactant that gently lifts dirt from the scalp and curls. Our Curl Cleanser & Conditioner is also infused with cleansing oils such as moringa oil and moisturising oils such as watermelon seed oil. When using the BY SELINA Curl Cleanser & Conditioner you will also need to ensure you are massaging your scalp for a least 5 minutes when washing to help lift dirt so that it can be washed away.

“I have just started conditioner washing and I have an itchy dry scalp!”

Itchy dry scalps can be for several different reasons. If you have just started conditioner washing it may be that you are not spending enough time massaging the scalp to help lift dirt and dead skin cells. Try a silicone based scrubber to really help lift dirt from your scalp so that it can be washed away. If you have just switched from away from sulphates and foaming washes then your scalp may also be dry, one of the most effective natural remedies for this is a small amount of organic olive oils on the pads of your fingers massaged into your scalp to hydrate the skin. Do not drench your curls or scalp in oil, treat the skin on your scalp with the same care you would the skin on your face and apply the oil sparingly.

“What is the best way to detangle my curls!”

The BY SELINA Curl Cleanser & Conditioner and Conditioning Curl Detangler contains lots of slip to help detangle even the knottiest of curls. To get the best out of our conditioner and detangler ensure that your curls are fully drenched in water before applying your product. Once applied, let the conditioner sit for a moment and then scrunch in some water before detangling. The BY SELINA products are highly concentrated which means you do not need a copious amount of product to detangle your curls. The Curl Cleanser and Conditioner is a lightweight product whereas the Conditioning Curl Detangler is a thicker product designed for thick, hard to detangle curls. Our Conditioning Curl Detangler is also infused with beautiful oils such as jojoba oil, castor oil, wheatgerm oil, tea oil and moringa oil to help nourish your curls. Our Conditioning Curl Detangler can also double up as an active conditioning treatment for parched curls.

For super easy detangling I suggest to section your curls and detangle from the bottom up with either your fingers or a wide-tooth comb.

“My hair is frizzy with no definition!”

If your hair is dry and frizzy after washing then there are two approaches that you can try, but first let’s understand frizz. Frizz is usually caused my curls that lack hydration, moisture or cuticles that have been ruffled up. All of the BY SELINA products are pH balanced to ensure that the cuticle lays flat, this is great as a happy cuticle means easier detangling and shiner, stronger curls. In addition to using the BY SELINA product to help the cuticle to lay flat, your washing and styling technique can also help massively. Firstly, when you have detangled your curls, squish your conditioner into your curls with water in a downwards motion to ensure you have properly saturated your curls, your curls should feel like seaweed and make a squishing sound, this is how you know your curls are properly hydrated. Once your curls have been washed, use a t-shirt as opposed to a towel to soak up excess water. Using a t-shirt instead of a towel helps reduce frizz. Finally, use the BY SELINA Hydrating Curl Gel to help define and add shine to your curls. The BY SELINA gel is pH balanced to encourage the cuticle to lay flat, but also creates a cast around your curls to encourage definition. Once your curls are dry scrunch out the cast to reveal soft and shiny curls. Always apply the gel to wet or damp curls for maximum definition and hold.
