I hope you have all been keeping well. I am so excited to be writing this blog post to introduce to the changes I am making at BY SELINA.
Standard cosmetic labels
I was recently listening to a podcast about sustainability and I am a bit ashamed to say I had no idea about how non-eco friendly most cosmetic bottle labels are! During the podcast I learnt about more sustainable labels made from ROCK PAPER. As soon as I heard about the labels, I just knew I had to have them for the BY SELINA bottles. Most labels are made from trees, use a lot of CO2 in the manufacturing process and use a lot of bleaches and acids too. Of course, these chemical and the heavy reliance on water for the manufacturing process is not great for our environment.
Rock Paper Labels
Step in, ROCK PAPER LABELS. As the name suggests, these labels are made from rock. In particular they are made from waste material from the mining industry. Because the labels are made from rock instead of wood pulp there is zero reliance on tree. The manufacturing process of these labels is also more eco-friendly as no acids or bleaches are used. It is estimated that if rock paper was used to replace most labels it could reduce carbon dioxide by 62% and water consumption by 99%. Because rock paper does not use wood pulp the demand on wood would also decrease by 100%! The labels do contain 20% plastic as they do need to be waterproof for in shower use but the plastic is fully recyclable and can be recycled in your normal household recycling.
These labels have been a huge investment for me because like with all sustainable options, they are more expensive than their non-sustainable counterpart. However, I have always said that I wanted to planet before profit and I think these labels are another step in the right direct for BY SELINA. I have started initially the change with the Curl Cleanser & Conditioner and will over the next few months phase out the old labels on the remaining products until the complete BY SELINA range uses rock paper labels.
I hope you will love these changes as much as I do and even if I do say so myself, the labels look and feel absolutely amazing! I can’t wait for you to start receiving your bottles with these all new rock paper labels.
Keep safe and well sustainable curlies!
